She Never Changed Her Clothes

Today, we talked about the political machines and how they worked. Very, very interesting. Nothing was written...a handshake will do. You wouldn't want anything on paper.

We also talked about Hettie Green. She was the richest woman in America during the Gilded Age. She was very shrewd, very conservative, and very cheap. It is said that she never changed her clothes...even her undergarments. (That is what the professor said!) She allegedly carried oatmeal around with her so she wouldn't have to eat in restaurants...and she would warm it on the heat radiator.
Today, on our walk, we went to Morningside Park. At one time, it was a very dangerous part of town. Then we got on the subway and went to Harlem. We went to the Bronx Museum of Art. Thank you Zach for being the great artist that you are. I appreciate you now more than ever. Then we were off to the Yankees game.

We stopped outside the stadium for pizza ... to save a few bucks. We had nosebleed seats right behind home plate. I think I was the only one in the stadium that clapped for BJ Upton when he was up to bat. You must root for the local boys, you know! Former Mayor Guiliani was sitting by the Yankees dugout. My camera doesn't zoom enough, but he was really there. The Yankees won 5-0. It was a fun time and a long, hot subway ride home. We stopped at the Seinfeld restaurant for dessert on the walk back to the dorms.

Dear Kelley, What an adventure. I regret David and I did not walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Looks like fun. Also we rode on the subway to Brooklyn but we were going the wrong way. We were trying to get to Ground Zero. Have fun! Laura
