Decatur House and the Monuments at Night

We started the morning at the Decatur House. We had a wonderful presentation by two women protraying two urban slaves. The urban slave had a little bit more freedom to move around than the rural slave. They dressed better and were generally fed better. The second picture is the outside of the slave quarters at the Decatur House. While Stephen Decatur had an an extravagent house, his slaves (approximately 20), were cooped up in a small area. This is a narrow, narrow, dangerous staircase leading to their quarters.
After the meeting today, we headed off on a tour of Washington by moonlight. It started at 7...not at moonlight. Our tour guide, Clayton, a retired Marine was an exceptional historian. He just received this flag a couple of weeks ago from his sister. She had found it in his mother's house. His mother had it in her front window when he was in Vietnam. He said he had a master's degree in education but didn't like to deal with the "other" stuff teachers must do. I wonder about what he could possibly be talking ?
Before we got rolling around the capital building, we were stopped by the DC police...routine.
We toured a lot...but we stopped at the FDR Memorial. This is one of the newer monuments. The first statue of FDR in the wheelchair was purchased solely by the Disabled Americans Association. They felt the monument didn't truly show how he was disabled. Our guide said that many Americans did not know that he was disabled, because the press kept his private life separate from his public life.
The second statue is of a breadline...you know that.
The Supreme Court.

The Eyes and Ears of the White House...Eleanor Roosevelt.
More pictures and stuff to come...time to present a project.
BTW....my new lock...DIDN'T work. George Washington University $54,000 a year....keys don't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At least for me...room 1007! Arg!!!!
