Day 1, Blog 2

Pretty darn cool...I decided to take off on my own and met a teacher from NYC and another from Ohio. We had one hour until meeting time...so, here I am at the restaurant seen on Seinfeld. Here I am in Central Park.
Then we gathered to "meet" for the first time. There are 25 teachers. About a third are from NY. We walked to the V & T Restaurant where we dined on salad, bread, and chicken marsala. I can do this! I checked out the restroom too...nothing to write home about:)

We met the professor Dr. Kenneth Jackson. He will be our teacher here. He is THE prominent contributor to the PBS documentary "NEW YORK." He has been at Columbia University for about 40 years (his words...I don't know the exact number). He is very excited about New York and its history and I'm looking forward to learning from him.

Did you know that John D. Rockefeller was the richest man EVER! In US history, JD Rockefeller comes in at #1. Bill Gates comes in at #5. Andrew Carnegie is #6. Rockefeller's wealth at the time of his death was valued at $192 Billion (in today's dollars). Bill Gates is at $82 Billion. This is according to 2007 numbers. How about that?

This is the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. It is the largest Cathedral in the world. Some of you may say that St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican as the largest. However, St. Peter's is not a cathedral. A church is designated a cathedral when it houses a cathedra, a bishop's ceremonial chair, and thus serves as the administrative seat of its diocese. St. John the Divine is a cathedral because it is the seat of the diocese of New York of the Episcopal Church. Although the Pope is the Bishop of Rome, the seat of the Roman diocese is St. John Lateran, not St. Peter's.
St. Peter's is no longer the world's largest church. Therefore, St. John the Divine -- even in its unfinished state -- is the world's largest cathedral, and third-largest church. I asked about the number in the congregation. Dr. Jackson said "not many." So, it is physically the largest but not the biggest in number of members.

Did I tell you we are going to a Yankees game?

7kyle*Kyle and I just got back from N.J. and were up in N.Y. It is Kyle's favorite city. He has decided he wants to live in N.Y. His favorite place to go is China Town. If you get a chance to go make sure it is toward late afternoon or on a Sat. The place comes alive at that time. Also, little Italy is right around the corner. You can get the best food, as good as being in Italy. Can't wait for more adventures! Barb

Kelley -

Welcome to my part of town :o) I'm looking out over the Hudson as I'm writing this. As Steven mentioned, you should check out Little Italy and China Town if you get the chance. Also a short ride on the subway or PATH will get you to World Trade Center... Still to this day it's a pretty emotional place to be but something I would still suggest. There is a memorial wall display and it really is something to see, assuming your heart can take it.

Have fun in the city, I wish you had more time so we could met at lunch. You're going to the Yankees game tomorrow right? I'll see what's going on and maybe I can make it to the stadium. I would just need to know where you're sitting, hehe.
